Info Post

We had a BLAST this week as we played, crafted & learned with Snowman! An added bonus for us was that we got our first (real) snowfall for the season on Thursday!! So the kids got to play in the snow as part of our Snow/Snowman week – PERFECT!!!

Snowman for dinner – We had a make your own mashed potato snowman. It was so much fun! I scooped out the mashed potato balls on their plates. Then the kids got to decorate the snowman using foods I had on the table. Here are some of our creations – they tasted pretty yummy too! (It was a great way to get kids to load up on fun, healthy veggies!)

Marshmallow Activity

I loaded a bin with mini marshmallows & some big ones too. I included toothpicks (under supervision only) to make snowmen and snowflakes; the kids then used edible food markers to paint on their faces & accessories! I even included a snow plow truck to move the “snow” around! Goofy decided to make ‘buildings’ instead.  Then they got to eat some of their creations!

It’s SNOWING!! (Click to see post about ‘Snow’ Sensory Shaving Cream Activity)

We set up a scene using plastic characters & animals we had around (making sure they were washable!). Then I let them go crazy with shaving cream to make it ‘snow’ on them! They had so much fun squishing & giggling!! An added bonus is all our characters are nice & clean now!!

Sock Snowman. Didn’t they turn out too cute? They have become the kids preferred bedtime friends for the moment. (If you want a great set-by-step tutorial check out I Heart Crafty Things. )

Math Visualization Activity by making each snowman 1-10 balls (bingo markers) tall. They thought the super tall snowmen were so silly! (I saw this idea at I Heart Crafty Things.)January 2012 1625

‘Emotional’ snowmen out of plates. We talked about emotions & then made snowmen that represented different emotions. We talked about how we all get mad sometime, the important thing is to not sin in our anger as the Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:26. (I first saw snowman paper plate faces as garland at School Time Snippets. )

Snowman for Dessert – Snowman Smores (not sure what was up with the lighting?) I put them on a cookie sheet for about 5 minutes at 400 F. After they came out I plopped an orange M&M sideways for the nose & 2 black M&M eyes. They were perfectly goey & delicious!! My hubby & I topped it with another graham cracker & ate it as a smore!! (We almost make vanilla ice cream snowman to decorate with fruit, but figured we’d probably had enough food fun for one week =-)

Crushed Egg Shell Snowman. It made a cool texture to the project and the kids thought it was hilarious to get to use eggs! (I first saw this idea at Mama Mia Heart 2 Heart.)

Science Exploration – I froze some of their preschool figures in ice blocks. We then experimented with what made ice (or snow) melt. I really liked the book Sneezy the Snowman by Marueen Wright to go with this lesson. The book teaches kids several ways that snow melts in the context of a fun story. As far as our experiment I let the kids try whatever came to mind: blowing, sprinkles, ketchup, crushed red pepper, etc. We discovered that hot (in the form of cocoa, water, fire, room temp, microwave, etc) all worked. We also discovered that salt also melts ice and correlated to to why they put salt on our icy roads in the winter. It was a lot of Science fun!

Paper Snowman Craft – Just cut a circle out of a piece of white paper and then keep going round and round leaving a circle in the middle as the snowman’s face. The kids added a face, hat, and arms. TADA a cute hanging snowman.
