Review & GIVEAWAY: We Choose Virtues Parenting Cards-faith based

You’ve probably seen the We Choose Virtues button on various blogs.  Did you ever wonder what Virtue means?

A virtue is a positive trait or quality subjectively deemed to be morally excellent and thus is valued as a foundation of principle and good moral being.

At our home we are constantly trying to instill good character/ morals/ virtues into our kids.  We want our kids to do what we say not just because it is what Mom or Dad said, but because it is the right thing to do.  So I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to review We Choose Virtues!  This is a product that we can all really benefit from!

So what is We Choose Virtues?

We Choose Virtues is character development program for kids (ages 3-11). There are options so that it can be used at home, in public schools, homeschools, or churches.  You can either purchase a kit (available for secular or faith-based) or  just buy the products that you think will work best for your family. The program covers the following virtues: Diligence, Helpfulness, Perseverance, Gentleness, Contentedness, Attentiveness, Honesty, Kindness, Self-Control, Patience, Obedience, and Forgiveness.  The products are high quality, colorful, and easy to incorporate into every day.

Parenting Cards (faith based)

In my opinion, the Parenting Cards - faith based {$34.99} are the bread & butter of this program.  If I were going to pick just one item to buy it would be these! There are 12 full-color cards {8 1/2” x 5 1/2”} that feature one of the Virtue Kids along with the virtue/character trait that they represent. Everything your child needs is on the front of the card and all the helpful parent tips are on the back of the card.



The front of the card shows the short “I am” catchphrase with the and the go-along antonym {I am NOT}. Along the bottom of the card is a tie-in Scripture verse {NIrV – I do wish it was NIV like the other verses we learn. Maybe in a future edition they will offer choices here} that you can learn together during the week.  The picture shows Oboe Joe (note Oboe/Obedient). Children will learn that Joe is practicing his oboe to play it in a marching band. Joe must play the exact notes written for it to sound beautiful with all the other instruments.

The back of the Parenting Virtue Cards go into more detail for teaching. Each card includes:

• teachable moment ideas


• a challenge for the day {or week}


• what would be appropriate to say if you are wrong in the situation


• a short story about the Virtue Kid

I love that this program is so versatile! You can simply use the Parenting Cards - faith based to present the character alone (quick, simple, effective) or you can incorporate Bible stories, crafts, or additional literature on the character trait. The sky is the limit!

Our {I am Obedient} Week

We decided to incorporate the virtue with our Bible lesson. We started by taking the {FREE} Family Character Assessment to figure out what virtues our family need to work on the soonest. We choose to start on “I am” Obedient. We plan to spend 1 week as a family on each virtue. This is going to be our Bible time together for the next 3 months. Here is what we did as the week we worked on the virtue of {I am Obedient}:

• Introduced Virtue Kid (Oboe Joe)


• Catchphrase (OK, what ever you say, I will obey, right away) –my kids picked this up QUICKLY! We repeated it various times through the day as needed.

I am Obedient Catchphrase (We Choose Virtues)

• Antonym (I am NOT argumentative, unwilling or slow and I don’t refuse to do what I’m told!")


• Scripture verse  (Psalm 119:34 – Help me understand your law. Then I will follow it and obey it with all my heart, NIrV)


• The kids colored the page from the Coloring book (only $3 to download all 12 characters; You can use over and over with your own kids!)

• We read the following stories from the Bible about people who were obedient and those that weren’t. We did a craft or activity to reinforce it: Adam & Eve (Genesis 2:15-17, Genesis 3 – fruit salad)  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (Daniel 3 – fiery furnace craft), Jonah & the giant fish (Jonah 1-2 – wordsearch), and Abraham & Isaac (Genesis 12 –coloring sheet)

• At bedtime we read a book about obedience (see list below), talked about how we did being obedient, and prayed thanking God for any success we had and praying for grace to cover our failings and to do better tomorrow. The kids got to put a sticker on our chart 100 days of Virtue for $11.99)
